Directions:The route starts on the Eisenwurzen cycle path R 16 to Waidhofen an der Ybbs. It is best to cycle directly through the "town of towers" (4 church towers and 3 town towers) and enjoy its beauty and possibly a first stop at the parish church.
Continue over the footbridge over the Ybbs (descend briefly) past the Hotel Schloß on Eisenstraße, turn left down to Urltalstraße and then right towards St. Leonhard. First you cycle 8 km slightly uphill to the Putzmühle junction and continue right along the stream to the St. Ägidi junction, then it is 3 km somewhat steeper uphill to the small church (1526), where you have a wonderful view of the Ybbstal Alps. From there, the route continues to St. Leonhard, named after the patron saint of cattle. A short lunch break in one of the two inns is recommended here.
The trail then continues for 8 kilometres along the panoramic route, always slightly uphill and downhill, to Sonntagberg Basilica - a very impressive building that can be seen from afar. Here you have a marvellous view of the Danube plain and as far as the Mühlviertel and the Czech Republic. After a stop at the basilica, a beautiful descent in long bends leads down to the Ybbstal cycle path and from there back to Waidhofen. If you opt for a shorter option, you can take the train back to Weyer or Gaflenz.
