In medieval times, Steyr grew to be a town of outstanding importance as the seat of the Otakar Counts and as a centre of iron production and trade.

Over many centuries, the beautiful Gothic town houses of rich merchants and artisans were the meeting place of artists whose works still characterize Steyr’s townscape or resound through its ancient walls and alleyways.

To this day, Steyr owes its wealth and high living standards to its iron industry.
