In times past, when it was impossible to communicate over large distances, the use of a signal instrument could decide over hunting success or failure, and even over life or death. Hunting music was not a mere embellishment, but a prerequisite for safe hunting in a group. The necessary signals of the hunters were the source from which hunting music as we know it today developed. To replace the long hunting cry with an animal horn signal was therefore only a logical step.
