Description:

This circular route with a length of 14.7 km and 733 m of elevation gain is very varied in its terrain. Starting on asphalt, the route alternates between very differently surfaced hiking trails and forest roads. There are two highlights on the route, on the one hand the natural monument "Rinnende Mauer" and on the other hand the Mollnerhütte located just above 1000 m elevation.

Directions:

The route starts at the bus stop near the National Park Center in Molln. From here, you first walk towards Spar, turn right at it, and continue on the sidewalk to the former inn Stefaniebrücke, where you turn left just before.

Then simply follow the signs "Rinnende" Mauer. Soon you will reach a hiking trail that passes directly under the road bridge. The quite rooty path leads along the Steyr, going up and down repeatedly and offers magnificent views of the partially turquoise shimmering Steyr. After 2.5 km, you reach a small wooden bridge where the crooked Steyrling flows into the larger Steyr River. After approximately 4 km, there is a fork, where you can descend left to the Rinnende Mauer or continue on the Salzsteigweg. The path to the Rinnende Mauer leads shortly but steeply down to the river, where you stand before a natural phenomenon. From a so-called drip spring, water falls like a fine curtain over a length of 50 meters from the rock. Especially after rainy days, this natural spectacle can be very well observed.

Back to the fork and then continue along the Salzsteigweg towards Gradau, passing a farm with a stud farm on the left, arriving after a total of 5 km at the intersection with Haunoldmühlstraße, where you turn right towards Molln (sign "Sonnseite Gstadt"). Then you walk a stretch along the asphalt road past the entire Bernegger area located on the right; at the end of the area, turn left uphill (Güterweg Hageleben) and soon afterwards left again, where the asphalt road changes into a forest road after about 100 m. A few hundred meters further, you will see a feeding trough on the left above; here you must turn right onto a initially inconspicuous hiking trail, follow the path straight past the feeding trough until you reach a forest road above. Turn right here (see sign "Mollner Hütte"); after a stretch along the forest road, there is a fork—keep left here—the end of this road leads a trail left uphill through the forest and finally a piece over a meadow up to the Mollnerhütte.

Once at the top, the path goes straight down below the hut, then simply follow the marked path through the forest until you reach an asphalt road. Turn right here. The church tower of Molln is already in sight, and you are about 3 km from the finish. After a while along the road, you can see the distinctive area of the Piesslinger company down on the left; then it is not far until you cross a bridge and shortly afterwards turn left uphill directly at the signage of "Gasthof Steinbichler." After that, you can simply continue straight ahead and you arrive directly at the church, where you shortly thereafter reach the starting point again.

Tip:

On hot summer days, you can also take a dip in the cool water along the Steyr River to cool off.

At the top by the Mollnerhütte, there is also a self-service drink depot on days when the hut is not staffed.

Equipment:

The required equipment always depends on the specific route and weather conditions. Regarding food: this is very individual, and it is advisable to have more rather than less in terms of equipment and food. A 5 km round in the valley requires less than a demanding mountain route. The weather can change quickly, and if you are not constantly moving or need to take a break, warming clothing is very important, for example.

We have a general checklist for you here:

  • Weather-appropriate running clothing for the respective season – weather forecast – region – altitude. This includes, among others:
    * a waterproof rain jacket
    * waterproof rain pants suitable for running
    * gloves and warm headgear (cap/headband/tube scarf)
    * sunglasses + sunscreen + headgear for very warm days

  • Trail running shoes

  • Water bottles, soft flasks, or a bladder with sufficient fluids for the particular route (possibly also salt tablets/magnesium)

  • Snacks for an energy boost in between: energy bars, gels, chocolate, trail mix,

  • Running backpack: ideally a trail running vest or trail running backpack, or a waist belt for small routes.

  • Dry pack: to keep your valuables or change of clothes dry (optionally a small trash bag)

  • Emergency blanket

  • Small first aid kit. In my opinion, an Israeli bandage is highly recommended: it is a one-handed operable wound and pressure bandage. You can find details here.

  • Emergency whistle (often integrated in the trail backpack)

  • Cell phone

  • Maps (online and/or offline)

  • E-Card or insurance card

  • Some cash

  • Microspikes/spikes: these can be a great advantage in winter and icy conditions.

  • Folding poles for trail running

  • Headlamp
