L2 Küpfern Station - Burgspitz Trail

Starting place: 3335 Weyer
Destination: 3335 Weyer

Short description:

An original mountain experience above the Ennstal.

Quality of experience: ***
Properties:
  • Loop
  • Refreshment stops available
  • Summit route

Description:

This route with a length of 11.8 km and 1052 m leads us via a rarely used ascent over the Ödboden to the 1429 m high Burgspitz.

Directions:

The route starts at the station in Küpfern. Immediately behind it, a signpost points to the Staffelmauer-Burgspitz (only for experienced hikers!) into the Fäulenbachtal. First on gently ascending farm roads along the Fäulenbach, it then goes steeply uphill. The path becomes narrower and sometimes gets lost in the densely overgrown slopes of the beech forest. Red dot markings are sparse, so you find the way until we come to a hunting hut with a well.

Immediately behind it, we then cross a forest road several times and then reach the Ödboden. We pass through this large alpine meadow, which stretches up to the ridge, and then come to the path that leads us directly to the Burgspitz. Another 150 meters in altitude and we stand at the summit with a beautiful summit cross and great panoramic views.

We continue back down the same way and keep right on the path towards Stallburgalm (1032 m). Behind the alpine pasture, we go a short piece through the forest until we meet a forest road (hiking trail 494), which we follow for the next 5 km. Passing the Inselsbacherhof, under the old railway bridge, we return to the paved road that takes us back to our starting point at Küpfern Station.

Tip:

Take advantage of the refreshment opportunity at Stallburgalm.

Equipment:

The required equipment always depends on the respective route and the weather conditions. Regarding food: this is very individual and it is advisable to have more rather than less when it comes to equipment and food. A 5km round in the valley requires less than a demanding route in the mountains. The weather can change quickly, and if you are not constantly moving or need to take a break, for example, warm clothing is very important.

Here is a general checklist for you:

  • Weather-appropriate running clothes for the respective season – weather forecast – region – altitude. These include, among others:
    * a waterproof rain jacket
    * waterproof rain pants suitable for running
    * gloves and warm headwear (beanie/headband/neck tube)
    * sunglasses + sunscreen + headwear for very warm days

  • Trail running shoes

  • Water bottles, soft flasks, or a hydration bladder with enough fluid for the respective tour (possibly also salt tablets/magnesium)

  • Snacks for an energy boost in between: energy bars, gels, chocolate, trail mix,

  • Running backpack: ideally a trail running vest / a trail running backpack or a waist belt for small routes.

  • Drypack: to keep your valuables or change of clothes dry (optionally a small garbage bag)

  • Emergency blanket

  • Small first aid kit. In my opinion, an Israeli bandage is highly recommended: this is a one-handed wound and compression bandage. You can find details here.

  • Emergency whistle (often integrated in the trail backpack)

  • Cell phone

  • Maps (online and/or offline)

  • E-Card or insurance card

  • Some cash

  • Crampons/spikes: these can be of great advantage in winter and icy conditions.

  • Folding poles for trail running

  • Headlamp
