Christkindl Pilgrimage Church

Steyr, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather

The church is the centre of the world-famous pilgrimage site Christkindl!

The church was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Giovanni B. Carlone and Jakob Prandtauer and consecrated in 1725 by the Bishop of Passau, Josef Dominik Graf von Lamberg. The centrepiece is the ten-centimetre wax baby Jesus in a small shrine.

Registration for groups is essential.

The story
In 1695, the seriously ill doorman and chapel master Ferdinand Sertl placed a small wax baby Jesus in the hollow of a spruce tree. He visited this place several times a week to pray. When he was miraculously cured of his epilepsy, so many pilgrims came that it became necessary to build a church. This gave rise to the name "Zum Christkindl unterm Himmel". Today's church was begun in 1702 by Giovanni Battista Carlone and completed by Jakob Prandtauer in 1708.
The figure of grace, a standing baby Jesus made of wax and only 10 cm tall, holding a cross and crown of thorns in his hands, is now located at the high altar in a small shrine above the tabernacle shaped like a globe.

During the year, the pilgrimage church can be visited from the outside, and access to the church is possible up to the barrier.
