Highlights of the Nativity Art
Highlights of the exhibition in the Palmenhaus are the baroque Lamberg nativity figures and the so-called "Waggonkrippe" by Josef Seidl from Mühlviertel, which was specially made for the "Licht ins Dunkel" campaign. This "rolling crib" was installed in an ÖBB railroad car and was used as an advertising medium for the ORF fundraising campaign "Licht ins Dunkel" during Advent in Austria, Lichtenstein, Italy and Germany in 1992 and 1997. Both cribs are sure to delight young and old with their richness of figures and detail.
The baroque nativity scene from Lamberg Castle, together with its precious collection of figurines, comes from the family estate of Count Josef Lamberg. It was given to the Steyr City Museum in 1914 by his wife Anna, the daughter of the arms factory founder Josef Werndl. Today, the valuable collection includes more than 200 dressed figurine dolls, the majority of which came from various church nativity scenes. For children and families, there are hands-on stations in the exhibition in keeping with the Advent season. Guided tours of the Nativity exhibition in the Palm House are offered throughout the year by appointment.
