The Steyr floodplain is a fascinating natural and cultural landscape.
Numerous cultural monuments bear witness to its use as a habitat, as do its natural treasures. Its water ‘is the most beautiful I have ever seen, always green, it resembles Alpine meadows that have become liquid’, as Julius von der Traun once wrote about the Steyr. Franz Schubert was inspired by the lively river to write his Trout Quintet - and in this NA-TURSCHAUSPIEL we also trace the vibrancy of the Steyr river. The dynamic power casts a spell over us - will we succeed in unearthing the treasure?
These are the highlights of our tour: - Ride on the Steyrtal railway (Steyr Lokalbahnhof - Pergern, duration 18 min) - A surface shaped by the Ice Age with terraces, conglomerate walls and caves, where Alpine alluvium can be found time and again - Dynamic course of the Steyr river with gravel banks and wonderfully clear water - Forests: Riparian forest, oak-hornbeam forest, copper beech forest - Semi-arid grassland - Centuries-old cultural landscape with an astonishing variety of habitats for plants and animals in a relatively small area Animals: kingfisher, black and great spotted woodpecker, dipper, grey wagtail, swan, ducks, pheasant, brown hare, roe deer,... - Plants: cowslip, Turk's cap lilies, ragwort, aconite, St John's wort, helichrysum, agrimony, etc. The exercises and activities depend on the age and interests of the participants.
