To our Lady's Chapell on the Stain
The small church, which stands on a 502-metre-high hill on the other side of the Steyr Gorge, contains one of the most important cultural treasures of Upper Austria, dating back to Maximilian I.
It is particularly famous for a protective mantle Madonna attributed to Gregor Erhart.

According to legend, the Emperor was in distress off the coast of Holland on Epiphany Day 1489. To thank him for his salvation, he vowed to donate a protective mantle Madonna, which was masterfully carved by Gregor Erhard from Ulm around 1515 - the patron is clearly recognisable under the mantle of the Mother of God.

The pilgrimage church Frauenstein is a place of prayer and encounter with God. It invites to prayer in silence and contemplation. With this inner attitude, pilgrims have been coming for centuries to the protective mantle of the Mother of God in Frauenstein, to our Lady Capel on the Stain. Around 1300, the construction of a church was first mentioned in documents.

Behind the church rise the western Sengsen Mountains with the Kalkalpen National Park. The rocky Hochsengs (1838 m) towers on the left, the Schillereck (1748 m) towers on the right.

The church is open during the day and free to visit.
