The highlight on this route is the natural monument "Rinnende Mauer", a conglomerate wall from which water emerges like a curtain on wet days.
A single trail under the road bridge opens up the Salzsteigweg E4 for the next few kilometers. Passing a waterfall, it goes up and down along the Steyr River. Overhanging, steeply towering conglomerate walls accompany us on the way. After exactly 2.5 km you come to a small wooden bridge where the crooked Steyrling flows into the larger Steyr river. In summer, small gravel banks invite you to swim.
But we cross the small wooden bridge and continue walking. The path is heavily rooted, so caution is advised on this part of the trail, the risk of tripping is very high. After about 4 km in the Schacher forest, we come to a junction where you have the option of descending to the flowing wall or continuing on the Salzsteigweg. To get to the flowing wall, you have to keep left, it's a short but steep descent to the river, until you're faced with a natural phenomenon. Water emerges from a so-called eaves source over a length of 50 meters like a fine curtain of water from the rock. Especially after rainy days, the natural spectacle can be observed particularly well.
We walk back to the junction and follow the Salzsteigweg in the direction of Gradau until, after walking 5 kilometers, we come to the main road. We keep to the right and walk a few hundred meters along the road in the direction of Molln. At the level of the Bernegger company, we turn left into the forest. Here is a sign from the Elfi Tunnel, the longest private tunnel in Upper Austria, which leads up the mountain to the Pfaffenboden over a length of 3.5 km and (unfortunately) is not open to the public. I've been able to walk through the tunnel before, the average gradient of 15% is anything but a pleasure.
However, we walk up the forest until we come to a forest road, which we will walk along for the next 2km. Here we also reach our highest point of the route. At the Mollnerhütte hiking sign, after 7.2 km, we turn right in the direction of the sunny side, from here we now follow asphalted paths and roads to the center of Molln. We walk past the parking lot of the Piesslinger company and take the path to Molln on the left up to the small Schwarz company, which produces the famous jaw harps. Past the church in the center it is only a few hundred to the starting point at the visitor center.
If you are not in a hurry, small gravel banks along the Steyr River invite you to jump into the cool water on hot summer days.
