Description:
With a length of almost 22 km and its 1300 Hm in the ascent, this circuit starting from the train station in Ternberg can definitely be described as strenuous. Refreshment stops or to replenish supplies are available at the Grünburger Hütte (10 km), at the Schobersteinhaus (14 km) and at Mitterhumer's Hofstadl Heurigen near the Beisteinmauer near the climbing center in Trattenbach.

Directions:
We start at the train station in Ternberg and first walk along the rails to an overpass, which we cross. At a wayside shrine we keep to the left, a signpost shows us the direction to the Herndleck and to the Grünburger Hütte. Over meadow paths we go along the Gschlösslweg until we meet the Herndleck road. We walk along the road and then branch off again on a hiking trail into the forest. The route is sufficiently well signposted. At the Herndleck parking lot we keep to the right and walk along the fort road for a few kilomters. Beautiful views, on clear days you can see as far as the Mühlviertel, accompany us along the way. Passing quiet weekend houses, we reach the saddle of the Herndleck, called Rehböden. At kilometer 7 we turn left and walk down towards Gscheid. At this junction we walk straight ahead, a signpost shows us the direction to the Grünburger Hütte.

After an ascent through the forest we come to the Sulzboden. From here it is not far to the Grünburger Hütte, which is at 1101 m and is open for business. We continue, the signpost points to the left keeping to the Schoberstein. We walk slightly downhill on the forest road towards Pfaffenboden, then steeply uphill again over the Schinder until we turn left into the forest at Mandlmais. It goes very steeply uphill, be careful when it is wet it can be very slippery. At the top, we can briefly branch off to the Gaisberg summit and the summit of Lust. The short detour is worth it.

Not far and we arrive at the Schobersteinhaus. If you have time, then it is worth a stop, the very good food here is worth a break. Afterwards we visit the summit cross of the Schoberstein (1285 m). The panoramic view into the foothills of the Alps is fantastic. After that it's all downhill, the strenuous climbs are done. We follow the path to the Klausriegler inn (unfortunately already closed), walk past the parking lot and down a narrow path until we reach the asphalt Kienberg road. Here you still have the opportunity to fill up your water supply at the Hofstadl. Behind the Hofstadl we continue on a narrow meadow path, past a game reserve, until we reach the road again at the Feitelmacher, which leads us out of the Trattenbach valley. At the crossroads at the Infocenter, we now walk along the road for about 3 kilometers, keeping to the left, past the paragliding landing site until we reach our starting point again at the train station in Ternberg.

Tip:
A short detour to the summit cross at Schoberstein is a must.

Equipment:
The required equipment always depends on the particular tour and the weather conditions. Regarding the food: This is very individual and it is recommended to have rather too much than too little with equipment and food. For a 5km round in the valley you need less than for a demanding tour in the mountains. The weather can change quickly and if you are not constantly on the move or need to take a break, for example, warming clothing is of great importance.

We have a general checklist for you here:
