Description:

A longer and strenuous route, very varied on the local mountain of the city of Steyr. Located on the municipal border between Molln and Ternberg, we overcome 1200 meters of ascent on just over 22 kilometers during this run.

Directions:

The route starts at the bus stop near the National Park Center in Molln. We run towards the main street, passing Eurospar along the street. Until we turn right at a junction. A signpost shows us the direction to Steinköpfl. Shortly thereafter, we leave the street and turn into the forest. Stairs lead steeply straight up, and we reach a marking "Am Busserlberg." We continue, running briefly down a bit, and then we are already in the ascent to Steinköpfl. A nice trail brings us to a wonderful viewpoint over Molln and the beautiful mountain landscape before us. A small cross marks the highest point. Then we go downhill again, past a farm, onto a street, slightly uphill, and then downhill again over meadow paths. Until we reach Breitenauer Street, which we follow downhill to the junction that leads us to Schoberstein. First steeply up the asphalt road to the last parking lot. Here is the actual start of hiking trail no. 482. The well-trodden but very slippery path winds its way up the next few kilometers and crosses the forest road several times. Finally, the forest road leads us directly to the Schobersteinhaus. The summit cross, including a perfect panoramic view, is located behind the house on a small hill. At Schobersteinhaus, it is advisable to refill your fluids and/or take a short break. The very good kitchen of the house also invites you to enjoy a good meal, which I (and many others for sure) can only expressly recommend. After a short stay, we continue. We take the forest road back, passing trail 482 where we came up, and run towards Pfaffenboden until the signpost "Hiking Trail Pranzlgrabe." This narrow, beautiful single trail leads us back down to the valley onto Sunnseiten Street, along which we will run to Gradauer Street. Upon arrival, we go further down into the Steyr Gorge. Narrow over lots of roots, it goes up and down until the Stefanie Bridge, which we pass under. The last ascent costs us more strength, and then we are already back on the last hundred meters before our starting point at the National Park Center.

Tip:

The route is located on the south side and can therefore get quite warm in summer.

Take advantage of the refreshment options at the Schobersteinhaus.

Equipment:

The required equipment always depends on the respective route and weather conditions. Regarding provisions: this is very individual, and it is advisable to have more rather than less when it comes to equipment and provisions. A 5km round in the valley requires less than a demanding route in the mountains. The weather can change quickly, and if you are not constantly on the move or need to take a break, warming clothing is very important, for example.

We have a general checklist here for you:

Weather-appropriate running clothes for the respective season – weather forecast – region – altitude. These include, among others: * a waterproof rain jacket * waterproof rain pants suitable for running * gloves and warm headgear (cap/headband/scarf) * sunglasses + sunscreen + head covering for very warm days

Trail running shoes

Water bottles, soft flasks, or a hydration bladder with enough liquid for the respective route (possibly also salt tablets/magnesium)

Snacks for an energy boost in between: energy bars, gels, chocolate, trail mix,

Running backpack: ideally a trail running vest/a trail running backpack or a belt pack for short routes.

Drypack: so your valuables or change of clothes stay dry (optional a small trash bag)

Emergency blanket

Small first aid kit. An Israeli bandage is in my opinion highly recommended: this is a one-handed operated wound and pressure dressing. Details can be found here.

Emergency whistle (often integrated in the trail backpack)

Mobile phone

Map material (online and/or offline)

E-card or insurance card

Some cash

Crampons/spikes: these can be of great advantage in winter and icy conditions.

Folding poles for trail running

Headlamp
