The Schwechaterhof carries the name of the Schwechater brewery in its own logo; the inn, founded in 1805, was owned by the Schwechat brewery from 1889 to 1961 - so it's no surprise that you get perfectly tapped Schwechater Zwickl here. But Wolfgang Pötzl - the third generation to run the family business - makes more of it. He is a beer sommelier and specialises in local craft beers (the small bottles at reasonable prices). Cosy parlours, a rustic beer garden with chestnut trees and a beer bar show: Beer is the focus here. And if you look closely, you will also find a collection of historical beer mugs and a collection of models of beer trucks. There are special beer tapping programmes and beer tastings with beer sommelier Wolfgang Pötzl and beer keeper Johannes Siegmund for guests on advance booking. Beer-related events every month. The Christmas market traditionally opens with the Barbarabier tapping - including a sword dance and a procession of squires - on the main square. And during Advent there are up to a dozen Bock beers on the menu.
Beer delicacies such as the Braumeistersteak (pork steak with bacon and beer sauce), Bierschnitzl, Beifahrertoast (toasted brown bread slice, grilled bacon, fried egg and fried onion), Schwechater Feuerspieß.
Insider tip: the legendary Reiterweckerl, which always goes well with a glass of beer.
