The Handicrafts Museum tells of the times when the knifemakers' guild in Steinbach an der Steyr flourished. Until 1967, the Steinbach knifemakers created true works of art here in the knife factory Fanz Pils & Söhne under the toughest working conditions. Now the "Knife Museum" presents the craft of the knifemakers and bladesmiths, their importance for the people and the development of their settlement on an exhibition area of over 200 m2.
- Ground floor: Knife making
- 1st floor: The life of the knifemakers, their customs and club life
- 2nd floor: Historical development, knifemakers' guild, trade connections of the "Golden Steinbach", guild and church
The Steinbach Knifemakers' Guild consisted of the craftsmen within a radius of 2 miles (15.4 km) around Steinbach. They were first mentioned in a document in 1422. Under the hardest working conditions, the Steinbach knifemakers created true works of art, which they sold at the most distant markets. The knifemakers were so rich that the village used to be called "Golden Steinbach".
THE KNIFEMAKERS' PATH
From the station of the Steyrtal Museum Railway, the signposted Messererweg (Knife Trail) leads along the river Steyr, where the history of the houses, the knife makers as well as the traders is presented. After the museum, the path continues up to the admirable village square, where even today the house facades and architectural details are reminders of the flourishing trade with Venice.
WALK
After visiting the Messerer Museum, walk up the Hochgasse to the idyllic village square and enjoy a wonderful view from the Sengsengebirge over the Tote Gebirge to the Alpine foothills and the central region of Upper Austria on a hike along the Panoramaweg (walking time 1 hour).
