The museum of scythes "Geyerhammer" is situated in an ancient scythe mill upon the river "Alm".
Visit this unique industrial monument, located in the very idyllic landscape along the Alm river!
A “Scythe Path” of ca. 2.4 km (1,5 miles) length takes you to the largest Scythe production manufacture of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Arranged like an Open Air Museum, you are confronted with production units, living quarters and industrialists’ mansions of the “Black Counts”.
As an additional highlight, you could take a walk to a Castle ruin in Scharnstein (ca. 1 hour’s walk).
In the Museum of Lumberjacks “Va uns dahoam” (From our Home) you can get a glimpse of former tools and techniques of the local lumberjacks of the Alm valley.
Show forging in the scythe museum
Three heavy tilting hammers, driven by waterwheels, and the forges for heating the steel, together with a wealth of old tools let you visualize the heydays of the scythe production here in Scharnstein, which goes back four centuries.
Blacksmith’s performances will include the use of a pneumatic hammer and a waterwheel-driven tilting hammer, with which experienced blacksmiths can demonstrate various stages of the production of scythe blades.
The museum also includes an exhibition on the varied history of scythe making, especially in Scharnstein and the Alm valley, which has been tastefully integrated into the old hammer mill.
Additionally, all the production steps from blanks to the finished scythes, life in a forge workshop, and the social environment of the times, are illustrated in the exhibitions, as well as the development from manual to industrial production.
