On the occasion of the St. Ulrich Culture Days in 1977, the municipality of St. Ulrich bei Steyr erected Austria's first peace monument. Building blocks came from 70 countries around the world. A four and a half meter high, narrow column was erected. All the stones were cast into it, so that the semicircular inner wall shows the face of the stones. "Peace" is the moral theme of the peace community of St. Ulrich. Thus, the village center is also characterized by the peace monument and the Thaddäus Steinmayr peace path.
Thaddäus Steinmayr, driven by his terrible personal experiences in World War 2 and the impressions and threat scenarios of the Cold War, achieved great notoriety for our St. Ulrich with the erection of the Monument of Peace of the Youth of the World 45 years ago and the declaration as the first peace community in the world 40 years ago. This year, in light of current events just a few hundred kilometers from our national border, we are again very aware of the importance of active peace work. On Peace Sunday on May 22, 2022, together with the representatives of our partner communities Postbauer-Heng and Souleuvre en Bocage, the mayors of our neighboring communities Steyr and Behamberg and the official representation of the Province of Upper Austria, we felt how important it is not only to talk about peace, but to live peace. Already in the run-up, the children in the kindergartens and elementary schools have dealt with the topic and brought their colorfully painted stones to the church service at the peace memorial, which has been expanded to a peace (d)ank. The stones are to be taken along on the newly marked peace hiking trails and encourage people to reflect, refuel, reconcile and say thank you. The paths start at the peace memorial or at the church square in Kleinraming, meet at the Dambergwarte and are a symbol for the solidarity and peaceful coexistence of our two districts. If walking is too strenuous for you, you are invited to stay on the square around the peace monument and get information about the development of the peace community, among other things, in the former telephone booth that has been converted into a "Friedoline". The "Window to the World" and the flowering mandala in the form of a tree of life, designed and created by the students of the Kleinraming Agricultural School, further enhance our peace (d)ank site and invite visitors to linger peacefully.
