Short description:
This is the hammer in the land of hammers: the forest road from Trattenbach to Pfaffenboden is one of the steepest in Austria. Although the quarry terrain between Schoberstein, Gaisberg and Hochbuchberg certainly encourages escape, tame your inner downhill hog: at a moderate pace, hikers need not fear kamikaze bullets, the Schreibach waterfall would not have deserved to be rushed past either, and a little training of your fingertip feeling can't hurt at all before the last cart path to the old Messerer village.

Trattenbach - Mösern - Hausbach - Molln - Dorngraben - Pfaffenboden - Trattenbach

Directions:
In Trattenbach at the turnoff Wallnermühle (information office) go right past the mill and up through the village, past the Messerer Schaubetrieb Löschenkohl, the museum and the chapel. After 1.3 km at the Jausenstation Drah Hütt'n turn left towards "Gh. Klausriegler", over the bridge and uphill in hairpin bends. At the Oberpermesser farm, turn left and walk up to the farm ovens on the Kienberg. After 1.0 km turn right, after another 420 m straight on and past the Hubertus chapel. After the uppermost house on the gravel road into the forest. After 1.26 km turn right into the Schönbachgraben, after another 650 m straight on and high above the Wendbachgraben uphill. At the crossing "In den Mösern" (950 m) turn right towards "Molln" and over a saddle. After 780 m turn left downhill. In front of the meadows of the Rosenegger Alm turn sharp right towards "Maultrommelrunde, Molln, Steyrtal" and on the cart path next to spruces and down the alp past the Bilderstadel. Then begins a 430 m long pushing stretch (at the junction straight ahead in the direction of "Breitenau"). On the lower meadow turn right and after 10 m left again (WW "Maultrommelrunde, Molln, Steyrtal"). To a barn, on the field path downhill and after 820 m past a house. Later left down the asphalt road, past farms and in a wide bend into the valley of the Krummen Steyrling. At the bottom (467 m) On the Breitenau road turn right (out of the valley) to Molln. From the National Park Center Molln in a northerly direction through the district of Gstadt to Gradau. At the Dornbach chapel turn right towards "Grünburger Hütte" and on the goods road into the Dorngraben. After 430 m continue on the gravel road, after another 300 m turn right uphill. At the top of the Pfaffenboden, take a sharp left up to the Grünburger Hütte (right to the Schobersteinhaus). With or without a detour from Pfaffenboden, follow the signs for "Trattenbach" down the middle of the three forest roads that branch off to the left. After two hairpin bends, a steep downhill passage of up to 32% (!) follows. After the Schreibachfall turn left downhill. After 150 m straight ahead. At a farm turn right on the cart track down and over the Klausbach. After 610 m turn right onto the asphalt road, after 60 m sharp left and then right down the up to 27 % steep gravel path. At its end, turn left on the asphalt road to Trattenbach and continue to the starting point.

Attention. From km 40.0 you descend via a 26% steep forest road. After the Schreibach waterfall, two more challenging downhill sections follow - take special care!
