Description:

The Luchs Trail is a long-distance hiking route with 11 stages through 3 internationally recognized large protected areas and touches Austria’s first World Natural Heritage site. It leads through Austria’s wild (forest) center, which has repeatedly been awarded by the Alpine Convention as a pilot region for ecological connectivity.

The romantically wild mountain landscape is probably the largest near-natural forest area in Central Europe. That is why the lynx was reintroduced here. The trail draws attention to this endangered animal species and thus contributes to its protection and survival. That the trail also runs through an extremely attractive mountain hiking area is a fortunate coincidence.

As a hiker on the Luchs Trail, you are challenged! The stages are long and overcome some elevation meters. Your senses are also required to stay alert and attentive. But don’t worry, even if you don’t see the lynx: you will feel the presence of the wonderful.

Directions:

  • Luchs Trail Stage 01 Reichraming-Anlaufalm: Ticket to the wilderness - through wild forests and over beautiful trails into the Kalkalpen National Park and to the romantic Anlaufalm.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 02 Anlaufalm-Laussabaueralm: In the middle of the lynx territory - through the lonely Hintergebirge to the rustic Laussabaueralm.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 03 Laussabaueralm-Admont: Back to civilization - over the Haller Mauern to Admont with the famous Admont Abbey.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 04 Admont-Klinkehütte: Back to Nature - over the lonely Scheiblegger Hochalm onto the sunny south side of the Gesäuse National Park.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 05 Klinkehütte-Johnsbach: With a wide view - over the viewing balcony with views of the rugged Gesäuse Mountains to the mountaineering village of Johnsbach.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 06 Johnsbach-Gstatterboden: Worth seeing - short valley stage for relaxation or on a more difficult spectacular variant into the Yosemite of Austria.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 07 Gstatterboden-Mooslandl: Steep ascent - crossing the northern Gesäuse Mountains via the Ennstaler Hut.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 08 Mooslandl-Palfau: Varied - near the valley along the wild Salza River and through the Noth Gorge.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 09 Palfau-Lassing: Hard-earned reward - grand finale in the Mendling Valley as the conclusion of a long but beautiful stage or shorter variant via the Moaralm.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 10 Lassing-Hochreit: Step by step into the wilderness - solitary high-altitude hike past the Hochkar ski area into the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area.

  • Luchs Trail Stage 11 Hochreit-Seehof: Mighty final chord - crossing the Dürrenstein and through the enchanting See Valley to the final feet-dip at Lake Lunz, or after breakfast you are taken by shuttle taxi from Göstling to the Ybbstaler Hut parking lot in the Steinbach Valley; this saves you almost 2 hours of walking time.

Tip:

So that you don’t get lost, the Luchs Trail follows existing marked hiking paths and is additionally signed. The Luchs Trail logo is usually attached as an additional sign of 10 x 13 cm on the existing hiking trail markings. Sometimes only a sticker of the Luchs Trail logo is fixed on existing boards. Spray markings of the logo along the trail will also accompany you.
