Description: Up via Klausgraben, then a beautiful, varied loop on forest road and hiking paths/climbs (HD5), past the observatories to the Hohe Dirn summit cross. After the summit, return briefly along the same route and then descend steeply to the left towards Hinstein (31/HD6), from there a stretch of tarmac back to Klausgraben and the railway station.
Directions: From the Losenstein train station, turn left onto the street from Gh. Blasl and then turn right (Goldgrubweg). Continue on this road along the track, leaving the warehouse and the settlement behind you, until there is a farm on the left side. Here follow the signs for the hiking trail to the left of the house until, shortly before the next (and last house on the street), the path 'Klausgraben' branches off steeply up to the left. Through this small gorge including several crossings of the stream and then continue to follow the path to the left of the stream along the meadow until the path branches off steeply to the left up over the meadow to the road. Keep right here and stay on the road until the hiking trail branches off to the left onto a forest road (Schosser Hütte / Hohe Dirn HD5 hiking trail). Stay on the forest road and always follow the HD5 hiking trail at junctions until you come out over a path near a meadow and hut. Past the hut on the left, go up to the right - here you have the choice of whether you take a forest road or a hiking trail to the observatories. After the observatories turn right and follow the signs to the Hohe Dirn summit. From the summit, a short distance back on the same path as when you walked there, before turning left down towards Hintstein (hiking sign Hinstein 31/HD6). Here you go steeply downhill over very technical terrain until you walk down a section of forest road to the farmhouse. At the farmhouse, turn right onto the road and follow it for a long stretch to the point where you came up across the meadow from the stream to the Klausrieglergraben. From here through the ditch on the same path as at the beginning back to the train station.
Tip: The Klausgraben (= small gorge, partly very exposed and with several stream crossings) is very impressive
Equipment: The required equipment always depends on the particular tour and the weather conditions. Regarding the food: This is very individual and it is recommended to have rather too much than too little with equipment and food. For a 5km round in the valley you need less than for a demanding tour in the mountains. The weather can change quickly and if you are not constantly on the move or need to take a break, for example, warming clothing is of great importance.
We have a general checklist for you here:
weather-appropriate running gear for the season - weather forecast - region - elevation. This includes: * a waterproof rain jacket * a waterproof rain trousers suitable for running * Gloves and warm headgear (hood/headband/towel). * sunglasses + sunscreen + headgear for very warm days
Trail running shoes
Drinking bottles, softflasks or a hydration bladder with enough liquid for the respective tour (if necessary also salt tablets/magnesium)
Snacks for the energy boost in between: Energy bars, gels, chocolate, trail mix,
