From the parking lot, follow the signs and markings 730 meters uphill, first on the forest road, then on the marked uphill path to a hunting lodge. Cross the forest road at this point. After a spring, another forest road is reached. Follow this to the left and a little later turn right. Hike steeply up to the forest road which then leads to the Ybbstalerhütte.
From the hut, you walk in a south-easterly direction through a gently ascending, sparsely wooded karst-dry valley. The storms of recent years have also left their mark here. The trail climbs moderately past several karst depressions and sinkholes, then somewhat steeper to the Legsteinalm, where the former hut serves as a mountain rescue base. At the Legstein hunting lodge, you pass the "Jungfraunbründl". Here you are in the north-eastern part of the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area, which covers a total area of around 7,000 hectares. The core area of this international protected area, the Rothwald primeval forest, is the largest remnant of primeval forest in Central Europe and a strict nature reserve according to IUCN category Ia. The stony path leads over karstified terrain through mountain pine lanes up to an undulating high plateau. After a good 2-hour walk from the Ybbstalerhütte, you reach the summit of the Dürrenstein (1,878m), which is adorned with a beautiful iron cross. The magnificent summit panorama tempts you to take an extended rest.
The descent to the Leonhardikreuz (1,406m) leads first through mountain pines and later across the alpine meadows of the Herrenalm. The detour (walking time approx. 10 minutes) to the hospitable Herrenalm hut, which is located slightly off the Luchs Trail, is definitely worthwhile.
On your return, the trail descends steeply from the Leonhardikreuz to the idyllic and picturesque Obersee lake - a natural gem! The trail then leads along a forest road through the wild and romantic Seetal valley. Past the interesting karst phenomenon of the "Roaring Bull" (underground waterfall) and the Ludwig Falls - the stream here plunges over a 50m high vertical wall - you come to the Mittersee. The landscape here is characterized in the east by the rugged rock faces of the "Hackermäuer" and in the west by the "Seemäuern" and the "Höherstein". From Mittersee, continue along the marked trail through the Seetal valley to the Seehof hiking starting point on Lake Lunz.
From there, you briefly walk along the road towards Lunz, but after 150 m turn left onto a road. It soon narrows into a hiking trail and leads along the southern shore of Lake Lunz - finally via the Dr. Carl Kupelwieser promenade - to the western end of the lake. Keep left behind the "Seeterrasse" restaurant and always left of the Seebach along the lakeside promenade to the beginning of Lunz. Pass the Seebach-Bad and you will come to a passage through the middle of a historic farm (Ledererhof). A bridge on the right leads across the Seebach. This is your onward route on the next stage towards Lackenhof - however, today's stage finish is in the center of Lunz at the Haus der Wildnis. To do this, follow the small road through the historic courtyard and continue in a left-hand bend around a hill until a path branches off to the right towards the church. Cross the St. Johannes bridge - a 26 m long larch wood bridge - and up to the left past the church to the meeting zone in the village: the Haus der Wildnis is now diagonally to the right on the other side of the road. You have reached your destination!

As part of the construction work on the Haus der Wildnis in the center of the market town of Lunz am See, a meeting zone was created around the parish church.
The newly paved network of paths connects old parts of the community, such as Lüftleck, with more recent buildings such as the two school buildings. The design of the large-format paving stones in light natural and gray tones is somewhat reminiscent of the rocks of the northern Limestone Alps, to which Lunz am See belongs.
The varied planting and simple furnishings of the traffic-calmed zone create several meeting points for outdoor events, cozy places to linger and a spacious parking area for cars, including electric charging stations. A functional fountain will quench the thirst of people and animals in the future.
The VOR bus route 640 in the direction of Waidhofen/Ybbs and bus route 655 in the direction of Scheibbs start from the new town center of Lunz am See. Several businesses in the immediate vicinity can be reached without barriers.
South of Lake Lunz, the 1,878 m high Dürrenstein offers one of the most untouched landscapes in Lower Austria, with the Rothwald, the largest primeval forest in Central Europe, at the northern foot of the mountain. Thanks to the "Dürrenstein Wilderness Area" project, a large part of the area has been placed under nature protection, allowing a variety of eastern alpine animal and plant species to thrive undisturbed. Visitors are only permitted to visit these areas on guided hikes so as not to disturb the ecosystem. Away from the nature reserve, however, the Dürrenstein and Noten peaks as well as the Großer Hühnerkogel and Kleiner Hirzeck can be hiked and discovered in a variety of ways: The routes captivate with charming karst formations, exciting caves and rich flora and fauna. If you climb to the summit, it is best to spend the night in the Ybbstalerhütte, which offers plenty of space and excellent food for an extensive rest.

Welcome to the hiking village of Göstling an der Ybbs - a vacation Eldorado in the Mostviertel region
The hiking village of Göstling is located on the Iron Road in the middle of the Göstling Alps (Hochkar 1808 m, Dürrenstein 1878 m) in the border triangle of Lower Austria, Styria and Upper Austria and belongs to the political district of Scheibbs. In the past, the village was characterized by the iron industry (Eisenwurzen) and agriculture, but today tourism dominates alongside agriculture and forestry. The most recent major boost for tourism in Göstling was the construction of the Ybbstaler Solebad, which is also home to the EMOTION LIFE CENTER, a fitness and therapy center.
Göstling is one of the most traditional vacation resorts in Lower Austria and, with the Hochkar, has the largest and most snow-sure ski area in Lower Austria: slopes of all levels of difficulty await here, from easy sunny slopes to steep mogul pistes. The cross-country ski trail in the Hochreit cross-country skiing center and the natural toboggan run round off the extensive winter offerings.
Summer vacation in Göstling
The summer offer in Göstling is diverse: The Mendlingtal experience, with one of the last functioning timber rafting areas in Central Europe, is one of the Top Excursion Destinations in Lower Austria. The hiking village of Göstling an der Ybbs offers many opportunities to experience an active adventure or to relax in the peaceful village idyll. You will find numerous attractive offers in summer for alpine hikes, themed hiking trails, via ferratas, cycling, hunting, fishing, paragliding, horse riding, high ropes course, tennis, swimming fun in the Ybbstal saltwater pool.
Handicraft museum in the Amonhaus
It all began in 2005 with an idea from the then - and now again - Deputy Mayor Johann Strohmayer and Elisabeth Honeder. The two were sitting together one day and got talking about a museum for handicrafts. That very evening, they asked Dr. Gudrun Malicky if she would be interested in working on such a project. Because Dr. Gudrun Malicky and Elisabeth Honeder share a love of needlework. The interviewee agreed, and so the foundation stone for the Lunz Handicraft Museum was laid.
Collection with more than 4,000 exhibits
The small museum has been open to visitors since July 2005. Over the past 15 years, our collection has grown to over 4,000 handicrafts.
Old library newly adapted
Embroidered christening gowns, crocheted lace and knitwear and much more are on display in the completely newly adapted rooms of the former library in the Amonhaus. The museum's collection also includes handicrafts that have almost been forgotten today, such as box strips and wall coverings.
For our annually changing exhibitions on specific themes, we are also happy to receive items on loan on the respective theme.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the museum!
The House of Wilderness in Lunz am See is the gateway to the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area and allows visitors to experience one of the last primeval forest areas in Europe. Born out of a commitment to conservation, research and awareness-raising, the modern visitor center combines nature education with innovative exhibition design. The recognition of the area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site underlines its international importance.
Under the motto "Discover - Marvel - Understand", the exhibition takes visitors right into the fascinating world of wilderness. Interactive stations, virtual and augmented reality as well as multi-sensory experiences make the dynamics of primeval forest, wilderness and water accessible in an impressive way.
A particular highlight is the virtual flight as a hawk owl over the wilderness area, as well as the 180-degree cinema, which brings the Rothwald primeval forest to life through the changing seasons. Digital applications, models and haptic stations show how the forest has developed since the Ice Age and what hidden habitats can be found even in seemingly dead wood.
The House of Wilderness thus builds a unique bridge between strictly protected nature and interested visitors - an informative, emotional and barrier-free experience.

From herb spiral and soup meadow
The Fössl family's garden is located in Göstling an der Ybbs in the Steinbachtal valley. The old house is easily accessible and lies directly on the road to the Dürrenstein wilderness area and the Eulenweg trail, a popular family excursion destination. From the street side, the front garden adorns the old house, which has been in existence since 1305, and welcomes visitors from afar with colorful shrubs and herbs.
Over time, the garden has developed into a herb garden with a herb spiral. This is where Roswitha Fössl devotes herself to her passion: gardening and the processing of tasty and healing herbs. Wild herbs are also regularly used in the kitchen, so a small piece of the house meadow soon became a beloved "soup meadow".
The lady of the house smiles: "I used to have a garden, now the garden has "me"." During a tour of the garden, she enjoys chatting with her guests about this and that herb and sharing her experiences.
Attractions
The mountaineering village of Lunz am See lies in the heart of the Mostviertel region. In addition to numerous hiking routes, the main attraction is Lower Austria's only natural lake with excellent water quality: Lake Lunz. If you like, you can take a guided tour of the Hammerherren or Handicraft Museum and learn about the long history of the village and the surrounding area.
But as soon as the sun is shining, it's time to get out, because the mountain is calling! There are more hiking destinations around the mountaineering village of Lunz am See than you can manage in a few days. In addition to mountain hikers and nature lovers, Lunz also has a lot to offer guests with an affinity for culture: the "Lunzer Seebühne" is unique in Austria - a multifunctional structure right on the lakeshore. During the day, it serves as a bathing island and diving platform. In the evening, the stepped seating cover is raised by water power and a covered grandstand with 250 seats offers a unique ambience for cultural events.
In winter, Lunz am See also has a lot to offer - when the ice cover is suitable, the lake invites you to enjoy a unique ice-skating experience. Skiing is almost as important in Lunz as our lake. Beautiful downhill runs of all levels of difficulty await you on the Maiszinken, after which traditional inns invite you to enjoy a cozy end to the day. Special highlights include the Sonnenalm cross-country ski trail and guided snowshoe hikes.
The parish church in Lunz am See is one of the most beautiful churches in the region - and is home to "Mary in the Golden Armchair".
Many special features characterize the Lunz parish church, which was built in the late 15th century as a two-nave hall church. Once a heavily frequented pilgrimage church on the way to Mariazell, the church underwent baroqueization and later neo-Gothicization. During revitalization work in 1952, the Gothic form was finally restored to its former glory. To this day, the church is visited by countless pilgrims and interested visitors.
There is no shortage of sights: Lunz am See parish church is one of the few European churches dedicated to the Three Wise Men. An impressive depiction on the right-hand high altar is dedicated to them. However, the most valuable showpiece of the parish church is the famous statue of Mary in an armchair: it was created by an unknown artist in the middle of the 15th century. It depicts the Mother of God holding the infant Jesus in her arms.
The historic church interior is very generously proportioned - and impresses with its particularly beautiful star-ribbed vaulting. The new altars were created by the Lunz sculptor Josef Ortner. The young folk altar and the new lectern were created by sculptor Adolf Hofmair.

The Dürrenstein-Lassingtal wilderness area on the south side of the Dürrenstein is home to the largest natural forests in Austria, covering an area of 7000 hectares. The area extends from an altitude of 650 m to the summit of the Dürrenstein at 1,878 m and connects Lower Austria with Styria. The wilderness area has been a nature reserve since 2002 and is therefore permanently protected.
The largest remnant of primeval forest in Central Europe is home to firs and spruces over 50 m high and well over 500 years old with girths of up to 4.8 m and copper beeches over 35 m high and more than 400 years old. It is a habitat for numerous wild animals, including some rare species such as the snow vole, Alpine shrew, brown long-eared bat and lynx.
In 2011, the "Year of the Forest", the wilderness area was included in Austria's seven forest wonders as a "fairytale forest". To protect this unique forest area, people only have access as part of limited and guided hikes. In 2021, the new House of Wilderness, an interactive museum and international research center, opened in Lunz am See.
