The Kalkalpen National Park protects Austria's last great forest wilderness with the longest natural stream system in the Northern Kalkalpen. The mountain forests are habitats for an outstanding wealth of animal and plant species. Remarkable is the high number of "primeval forest species", which can only survive in forests with sufficient old trees and deadwood. 75% of the national park area is wilderness area - this is unique in Austria.
